CRA’s New “Confirm My Representative” Rules – What It Means for You

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has introduced a new two-step process called “Confirm My Representative.” This change affects how tax preparers (like me) get authorized to access and manage your tax accounts.

Here’s what you need to know — and how we’re handling this to keep your service fast, simple, and secure.

What Is “Confirm My Representative”?

CRA now requires many clients to log in to their CRA account and confirm when a tax professional submits an authorization request. If it's not confirmed within 10 business days, the request is cancelled.

This affects:

  • Individual accounts (personal taxes)

  • Business accounts (corporate returns)

  • Trusts

But Good News — Not Everyone Is Affected

If I file your taxes using certified EFILE software, like I normally do, this change does NOT affect you as long as:

  • You sign the CRA authorization form (electronically or by hand)

  • I upload it directly through secure software

This is the method I use for most individuals, especially seniors and those who don’t have CRA My Account access.

What If You’re a Senior or Not Tech-Savvy?

No problem.

You do not need to create a CRA account just to work with me. I’ll continue to use EFILE authorization with a signed form — the same way I’ve always done it. The CRA still accepts this method, especially for seniors and those without online access.

If you already have a CRA account and prefer to confirm that way, I can walk you through the steps.

Business Owners – Heads Up!

If you’re a business client (corporation), CRA now requires you to log into your My Business Account to confirm authorization requests.

If you don’t confirm the request within 10 business days, it will expire, and I’ll have to re-submit it.

Tip: I’ll notify you as soon as I submit the request so you can confirm it on time.

Can You Avoid Logging In?

In some cases, yes.

CRA allows an alternative method using info from your Notice of Assessment (NOA) — especially for:

  • Sole proprietors (small business owners using their SIN)

  • Clients who don’t have My Business or My Account set up

In these cases, you’ll just sign the form I send, and I’ll submit it for you. CRA usually processes these in 1–5 business days.
